Changing from being a transaction oriented CIO to a transformational leader is a significant mind set change. The transformational CIO needs a strategic technology vision as well as a deep understanding of the various businesses within the business, and of the competitive landscape outside the business. For success, the transformation CIO needs to meld people with lean processes and enabling technologies to fuel growth, increase productivity and achieve competitive advantage. The CIO must work on all three key levels -- people, process, and technology -- with deep understanding in order to achieve a transformational business model that supports and drives the business.

Michelle Garvey, Global CIO, Warnaco
Jean Hill, VP, Federal Reserve
Bank of New York
John Repko, Corporate Senior Vice President & CIO, Covance, Inc.

Moderator: Ed Pospesil,

Building trusted relationships with members of the executive suite and down through the chain of command is critical to a CIO’s success. This requires the CIO to have an excellent understanding of the business and its competitive landscape combined with the ability to deliver IT solutions that meet and even exceed executives’ expectations. This is no easy task. Executive memories are short and, therefore, there is an ongoing need for the CIO to reinforce the relationships through more and more successes.

This session focuses on best practices and real world stories (case studies) of how the CIOs have successfully partnered with CXOs to deliver results and delight them. You will learn how to create and execute a plan to forge trusted relationships up and across the C-suite, in the lines of business (LOB), and even outside the organization with your vendor partners. Leave this session with lessons learned and tips on how to transform relationships to create successful CIO – CXO partnerships.

Do You Know Your Brand?

Introduction: Rhona Kannon, Partner, Information Technology Division, The Cambridge Group, Ltd.

Atti Riazi, Executive Director, CIOs Without Borders

Have you done a brand audit? Do you know how you are perceived? Do you know what type of feelings your brand creates? Good brand images are instantly thought of, are positive, and are almost unique among competitive brands.

Your brand image is not something you have or you don't! It is part of who we are and most likely each of us has a few, though one or two may predominate. The key to your brand is to identify or develop the most powerful image that is true and real and reinforce it through consistency and communications. That of course needs to take place on our identity both in the physical world and the virtual one.

As IT professionals we constantly struggle with the geek mythology and stereotyping. Understanding branding and communications will help us overcome some of these myths and develop stronger and more effective presence.

The New World: Leadership in the Time of Transition

Introduction: Bob Boshka, FWSIM Executive Committee Member

Dr. Curtis A. Carver, Jr., Colonel, U.S. Army, Vice Dean for Education, United States Military Academy

In this exciting presentation, COL Curt Carver explores the global environment in which CIOs operate starting with a long term strategic perspective and linking it back to the technical world in which CIOs operate today. Carver examines long term implications of an increasingly hot and flat world in the context of the instrumentals of national power – economic, political, informational, and military. Given this long term perspective, he then discusses the immediate implications for CIOs now. This combination of long term perspective and analysis of immediate implications provides a unique viewpoint on the current economic situation. Recently deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, Carver’s analysis of the current situation, understanding of the demands on CIOs now, and long term perspective provide a framework for the transformational leader of tomorrow.
